High heels are the main attribute of glamor and sophistication in the fashion world. Ladies’ high heels remain a symbol of style and sensuality for many years. However, do you know which risks they pose to your health? Below the main reasons why you need to think twice before wearing high heels are listed. 

1. Spider veins

Spider veins are swollen or twisted veins that usually appear on the legs. This is the most common side effect that comes along with wearing high heels. Spider veins are veins that become visible on the surface of the skin when circulation is impaired. Wearing high heels makes your calf muscles contract less. This means that less blood flows in the legs increasing venous blood pressure. This stresses the vein’s valves and leads to spider vein disease. 

Spider veins disease is a cosmetic problem that usually doesn’t cause serious health problems. However, some people may experience pain, discomfort, itching, or burning sensations. 

2. Lower back pain

The displaced vertebra and lower back pain are the main side effects of wearing high heels. High heels put increased weight in the balls of your feet. This makes your pelvic move forward. In order to compensate it, you begin to lean backward. Thus, the arch in your lower back increase and puts a strain in the lumbar spine.

In addition to the displaced vertebra and lower back pain, high heels may also contribute to chronic spinal nerve condition called foramina stenosis. This condition may cause many unpleasant side effects such as shooting pain, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, and spasms.

3. Foot problems

Wearing high heels may trigger a bunch of foot problems like plantar fasciitis or hammertoe. Plantar fasciitis is a disease that affects foot ligaments. It is characterized by a decrease in collagen and small tears in the ligaments. 

Hammertoe is another disease that high heels may cause. Wearing stilettos causes your toes to bear a lot more weight compared to flat shoes. Hammertoe is characterized by a downward bend or curl of toes. This condition may cause a lot of discomfort and pain while walking. If you notice that your toes changed their shape, it is recommended to consult a foot doctor. If left untreated, your toes may deform even more. 

4. Knee pain

High heels are extremely harmful to your knees. Wearing high heels causes extreme loads on the knee joint. High heels make your knees move further forward than when you are walking in flat shoes. This may result in premature aging of joints or even cause osteoarthritis over time. In addition to osteoporosis, it may contribute to stress fractures and trapped nerves in the legs.

5. Ankle sprains

Even the most comfortable and stable high heels significantly increase your risk of an ankle sprain. The ankle isn’t built to take that kind of pressure, thus any heels make it more vulnerable to injuries, including twisted or sprained ankles. However, even if you avoid injury, wearing high heels will weaken your ankle over time. In the long-run, it may also contribute to nerve damage to the lower leg.

6. Haglund’s deformity

Haglund’s deformity is a widespread problem that affects most women who wear stilettos regularly. Haglund’s deformity is a bone enlargement of the back of your heel. This enlargement tends to rub against your high heel shoes. This may irritate the soft tissue next to your Achilles tendon

7. Vocal chord problems

It might sound surprising but stilettos may really cause breathing problems. This, in turn, may harm your sensitive vocal cord. Wearing heels all day can make you breathe faster, shallower, and damage the vocal cords.
