A coronary calcium scan is a cardiac test that looks for specks of calcium in (and on) the walls of the coronary (heart) arteries. Calcifications in the coronary arteries are an early sign of coronary heart disease (CHD). Coronary heart disease is a disease in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up in the coronary arteries. In some cases, Cardiac CT is used to assess heart chambers, heart valves and the surrounding blood vessels. These fast and painless cardiac scans may indicate if there is an increased risk of heart attack even before any symptoms occur of heart disease. Heart scans can also look at blockages in the heart in certain situations. Coronary CT is most useful to determine whether symptoms of chest pain may be caused by a coronary blockage.
